• Predelica z Canyoning Challenge

    Experience Description

Canyoning in Predelica – Big Adventure
Canyoning in Predelica is not your typical “fun” canyoning experience. Due to its length and technical nature, this adventure focuses more on rappelling down huge waterfalls and walking through a unique, calm landscape.
With a lunch break, the tour usually lasts a full day. However, for those looking for a quicker adventure, we offer the option to do just the first half of the canyon and exit after the confluence with the Mangart mountain creek at 900m. The first half offers a stretch similar to Fratarica canyon, with plenty of fun jumps. The real adventure begins after the confluence, where the terrain becomes more technical. Group communication and size are crucial for ensuring everyone’s safety on this section.
In short, Predelica canyoning is ideal for anyone who has a full day to spend, enjoys taking it slow while admiring the views, and is accustomed to rappelling over high cliffs. It’s also a great choice for those who prefer not to hike too much, as the approach only takes about 10 minutes downhill.

Canyoning in Predelica is a truly exceptional experience, and it stands out in the Bovec canyoning region for its technical challenges and the majestic scenery it offers. Unlike typical “fun” canyoning routes, Predelica involves a combination of rappelling over massive waterfalls and tranquil walks in a unique, rugged environment.
This adventure is not short – it usually takes a full day, including a lunch break. However, for those seeking a shorter option, we can choose to complete just the first half of the route and exit at the confluence with Mangart mountain creek at around 900 meters altitude. This section is reminiscent of a stretched-out version of Fratarica canyon, with some exciting jumps. The real adventure, however, begins after the confluence. The Adventure
Predelica’s canyoning route is of v4a3 IV difficulty, which translates to 4/7 difficulty for rappelling, 3/7 for aquatic skills needed, and an ease of exiting the canyon rated 4/7. While these are just estimations and can vary, they give you a good idea of what to expect. Canyons are ever-changing ecosystems, influenced by the elements, and the natural formations may change with rain, rocks falling, or trees being carried down.
Some of the most incredible waterfalls in the region are found here, including the Engaged Lovers waterfall and the Diagonal waterfall, both towering above the canyon with their sheer beauty.

Canyoning in Predelica – The Upper Part
The journey begins between Tarvisio and Log pod Mangartom, near the small village of Strmec. The canyon starts just below Predel pass and above Strmec, underneath an old World War I fortress, where a red lion statue rests its head on dynamite sticks – a quirky landmark worth noting. The route ends at the confluence with Koritnica river in Log village, descending nearly 400 meters.

The upper part of the canyon resembles Fratarica in technical difficulty but is more dynamic, featuring a few jumps, slides, and some impressive waterfalls. The highlight is the Engaged Lovers waterfall, a double waterfall about 30 meters high, considered one of the most beautiful in the region. From there, the canyon flattens out, flowing gently as it meets Mangart creek. The final stretch of the upper part is relatively easy, with slippery rocks and boulders to navigate before exiting up a steep path leading to the Engaged waterfalls viewpoint.
Canyoning in Predelica – The Lower Part

After a brief walk, the canyon starts to narrow again. After a 30-minute break, the lower part of the canyon presents some high waterfalls, swimming through narrow corridors, and a few spectacular jumps. One of the most exciting features here is a long slide, where you’ll be completely submerged by the falling water from all sides – a sensation that feels like being inside a washing machine and might be slightly intimidating for those with claustrophobia.
The final highlight of the lower part is the 40-meter-high Diagonal waterfall. This majestic sight, surrounded by untamed nature, truly transports you to another time, perhaps imagining prehistoric creatures drinking from the pool below while the mist rises in the air. It’s a truly magnificent and humbling experience, one that offers a powerful connection to nature.

    The Impact of Natural Events
In 2000, Slovenia’s largest natural disaster occurred when a landslide on Mangart mountain affected the lower Predelica canyon. The slide, caused by prolonged heavy rainfall, led to the destruction of bridges, hydro plants, and tragically took lives. The landslide, carrying 1.5 million cubic meters of material, changed the landscape of the canyon forever. Some parts of the canyon, which were once narrow, widened to a 500-meter V-shaped valley, while others saw 40-meter-high walls stripped of all vegetation.
This event reshaped the lower part of Predelica, and while it has created a unique landscape, the ambiance is now very different than before. It serves as a reminder that nature is powerful, unpredictable, and ever-changing. The same forces of nature have affected other canyons in the area, such as Mlinarica, which is now closed to visitors for safety reasons.

    Fun Fact

While canyoning in Predelica, we spend most of the time out of the water. Because the canyon lies on the sunny side of Predel pass, it is suitable for canyoning even in the early spring or late autumn. You might even find yourself putting on your wetsuit as it begins to snow – adding an extra sense of adventure to your experience. Heavy rain is not a problem either; it only enhances the majesty of the waterfalls.
    In Conclusion

Predelica canyoning is an adventure like no other, offering stunning views, thrilling rappels, and the chance to experience the natural beauty of the Soča Valley. Whether you choose to take it slow or challenge yourself with the full route, the journey through Predelica is a memorable experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left the canyon.
