Fratarica Canyoning – A Cold Rush in the Valley of a Hundred Waterfalls
Fratarica is more than just a canyon—it’s a journey into alpine wilderness, a playground carved into stone by time and water, and an unforgettable shared experience. Nestled deep in Triglav National Park, this canyon is a favorite among adventurers and couples alike, combining heart-pounding thrills with serene alpine beauty.
After a short drive to Log pod Mangartom, a charming hamlet beneath the towering Mangart Mountain, your adventure begins immediately. Just minutes from the car, we reach the Koritnica River, where we cross by wading—an invigorating start in summer and a real challenge in the early season when snowmelt raises the water levels. If the river proves too cold or fast, there’s a scenic bridge nearby. Safety always comes first.
Once inside the canyon, you’ll descend through a water-sculpted world:

The descent itself lasts around 2.5 to 3 hours, following a 30-minute approach hike through the forest. Along the way, the challenges gradually increase, building your confidence with the support of professional guides. Some rappels are guided, while others offer you the chance to try solo under supervision—a perfect introduction to the sport.

Fratarica is Slovenia’s coldest canyon—and that’s part of its magic. Hidden on the shady, leeward side of Briceljk Peak, it stays cool long into summer. Even in late June, pockets of snow remain, keeping the water refreshingly icy. This unique microclimate creates conditions perfect for a little mindfulness training: floating silently, accepting the cold, and letting the mountain calm your mind. Some even drift into sleep-like states—especially those carrying stress from their everyday lives.
A Living Classroom for Canyoning
Fratarica is not just a tour—it’s a training ground. Just as the Soča River trains the best kayakers, Fratarica shapes future canyoning guides. From its beginner-friendly features to its advanced rappels, it offers the full spectrum of what canyoning has to offer. Our team also occasionally sets up thrilling elements like a natural zip-line system, rigged between a waterfall and a boulder below—a guided adrenaline burst that’s always optional, but never forgotten.
And for the most curious, there’s more. Further up the vertical walls, in areas untouched by most tourists, melting avalanche snow carves hollow chambers under waterfalls. Though off-limits on commercial tours, these strange, ephemeral formations remind us just how wild this environment can be.
