Zgornja trdnjava Kluže
Description
Perched above the iconic Fort Kluže near Bovec, Zgornja trdnjava Kluže (Hermanova utrdba) is a ruined Austro-Hungarian artillery fortress from 1900. Built to support the outdated lower fort in the era of modern warfare, it once housed over 100 soldiers and powerful artillery capable of covering the entire Bovec Basin. Named after Captain Johann Hermann, it played a significant role during WWI but was heavily bombarded by Italian forces and abandoned after suffering irreparable damage. Though largely forgotten, the remains of the fortress—walls, gun turrets, and observation domes—can still be visited via a steep forest path from Fort Kluže. Overgrown and hauntingly silent, the fortress offers a unique window into the past and dramatic views over the Soča Valley.
