During World War I, it became a strategic stronghold, resulting in the creation of Slovenia’s largest network of artificial tunnels. These wartime corridors, carved into the mountain, remain intact to this day, offering a glimpse into the trials and resilience of those who once endured here. Reaching the summit of Rombon offers multiple trail options to suit different hiking preferences:

• Kluže Fort – Rombon (5 hrs) – Easy Marked Trail
• Zavrzelno – Rombon (5 hrs) – Partially Demanding Marked Trail
• Kanin (Station D) – Rombon (5 hrs) – Partially Demanding Marked Trail
• Sella Nevea – Rombon (Trail “636”) (6 hrs 45 mins) – Partially Demanding Marked Trail
• Sella Nevea – Rombon (up the ski slope) (6 hrs 30 mins) – Partially Demanding Marked Trail

Locals’ Choice
The Kluže Fort – Rombon Trail offers the best combination of hiking, sight seeing and World War 1 history. You pass 2 fortresses in the first hour of the hike, and hike past the artificial tunnels and fortifications in the upper sections of the trail. The trail is marked nicely, reducing the risk of getting lost. The climb is of a medium difficulty (for experienced hikers), but be prepared to spend a whole winter day or a major portion of a long summer day. The majority of the trail is on the sunny side, so bring plenty of water. Although beautiful, the locals often refer to Rombon as a  “lonely mountain” as you will not meet too many hikers. Perfect for a refreshing retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
